1952 -- Egypt Experiences Military Coup
A military coup occurred in Egypt when King Faruq was overthrown by a group which called itself, "the Young Officers," led by General Muhammad Neguib.
1960 -- Israeli Ambassador to Argentina Declared Persona non Grata
Israel's Ambassador to Argentina was declared persona non grata in the wake of the capture of Adolf Eichmann. Eichmann was a Nazi war criminal who took refuge in Argentina. He was captured by Israeli Mossad agents and brought to Israel for his trial and execution.
1968 -- El Al Plane Hijacked
Palestinian terrorists hijacked an El Al airplane flying from Rome to Lod and landed it in Algiers.
1969 -- Nasser Ends Cease-Fire
Nasser declared that the cease-fire with Israel was over and warned that another war was in the offing.
1978 -- Itzhak Zamir Takes Over as Attorney General
Professor Itzhak Zamir was named attorney general, succeeding Professor Aharon Barak, who was appointed justice of the Supreme Court. The transfer took effect at the beginning of September.
1989 -- Local Elections Permitted for Arabs in West Bank and Gaza
The government ratified a policy initiative by Prime Minister Shamir permitting local elections for the Arabs in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
